The most toxic thing I do to myself is comparing myself to others through their instagram feed. Or any of their social media accounts for that matter.
Scrolling, scrolling and scrolling through picture after picture of the perfect body, the perfect relationship, the perfect life.. Yet, I definitely should know, social media isn’t always what it appears to be. Numerous times I’ve uploaded snapchats of myself looking happy and joking around 2 minutes after feeling completely worthless and not being able to get out of bed. I’ve uploaded snapchats of myself having the *best* time at a party, only to look around the room with an overwhelming sense of loneliness, and realise no one would care if I was there or not. I’ve uploaded pictures of my body that were taken with multiple layers of tan on, filtered and before I ate breakfast. I always try to portray myself as a strong, happy person, but more often that not what you see really is just an image. So much goes on behind the scenes and that’s what makes it even harder to realise when someone is actually struggling.
I made the conscious effort to minimise snapchatting / posting photos of my friends and family as they tend to get dragged into troll comments and it’s unfair on them. Thus, to any average person scrolling through my feed, it looks like I don’t have any friends or family. I begin to get the comments of “you’re such a loser / no one likes you / you have no friends” - whilst I’m sitting with a friend, reading the comments together and laughing.
We choose what to portray.
Something I need to realise and I really, really hope you do too - comparing yourself to ANYONE on social media is a waste of time and completely unrealistic.
Social media is the edited existence of our being. It is not always exactly who we are, how we are feeling or what we are going through. It’s an image to portray to the world what you want them to see, or what you feel you won’t be judged on.
The more you compare yourself, the more you will spiral into a really crap place in your mind.
I want you reading this to remember that you’re worth more than you think.
Keep going and remember that you are always enough.
